The Value of Counselling

As parents and carers, we want the best for our children. Children and young people often face emotional struggles that can be difficult to express or process on their own, or with the people closest to them. This is where counselling can be a valuable and supportive resource.  Counselling offers a safe, confidential space to explore feelings, emotions, and experiences with someone outside of one's own family or network.  It provides the opportunity to talk openly, be heard, without judgement or expectation, and begin to understand ourselves in a way that promotes emotional well-being and resilience.

Time frames

It is recommended to allow for a period of 15- 20 weeks of regular counselling for children and young people in order to see effective results.  This is to allow time to build trust and for meaningful progress to take place.

Some children may benefit from a shorter period of counselling, while others may find ongoing support helpful as they work through their challenges at their own pace.  Regular reviews are helpful to continue to assess this.  I include these in my work every six-eight weeks.

As a parent you may be eager to learn how sessions are going with your child.  I am happy to give brief feedback about how your child is engaging.  However, please be aware that I will not discuss specific details that your child may talk about in the sessions as these remain confidential to the child.

Through counselling and psychotherapy, children and young people can develop coping strategies, gain emotional insight, and build confidence in expressing their needs. It can be particularly helpful for those experiencing anxiety, stress, low self-esteem, difficulties at school, family changes, bereavement, friendship issues or other challenges in their lives.

If you are considering counselling for your child, know that it is a compassionate and empowering step towards supporting their emotional well-being.  It is not about ‘fixing’, but rather providing the tools and space to process, grow, and thrive.

what to expect

The first session is held with the parent/carer and considered an 'assessment' where we can talk and gather relevant information about the reasons and hopes for counselling.  This can be done in person, or online and is charged as a standard session fee.  It can be beneficial to hold this session with parents/carers only,  and begin sessions with the client at the following appointment.
